Genocide And It's Prevention

United Nations Advisory Committee on the Prevention of Genocide

In May 2006, Senator Dallaire was appointed to the Advisory Committee on the Prevention of Genocide by then Secretary General Kofi Annan. Chaired by Dr. David Hamburg (President Emeritus, Carnegie Corporation), the Committee also includes such individuals as Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Gareth Evans (former Australian Foreign Minister and President of the International Crisis Group) and Sadako Ogata (former High Commissioner for Refugees). With a mandate to support and provide guidance to the UN Special Adviser on the Prevention of Genocide, the Committee met twice in 2006 to produce a report on the future direction of the Office of the Special Adviser on the Prevention of Genocide. It is hoped that, by placing a high profile on genocide prevention in the United Nations system, the world is one step closer to ensuring that future tragedies, like that in Rwanda, will be prevented.

All-Party Parliamentary Group (of Canada) for the Prevention of Genocide and other Crimes against Humanity

Senator Dallaire is the founding chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group for the Prevention of Genocide and other Crimes against Humanity. Its executive is composed of Senators and MPs from all parties, including Senator Yoine Goldstein (Vice-Chair, Liberal), James Lunney (Vice-Chair, Conservative), Paul Dewar (Vice-Chair, NDP) and Francine Lalonde (Vice-Chair, Bloc Quebecois). In a non-partisan environment, the Group intends to ensure that the Government of Canada does all that it can do to prevent genocide and other crimes against humanity, increase the flow of independent information and analysis to parliamentarians about genocide and other crimes against humanity, and promote understanding of the importance of long-term approaches to genocide prevention.

Senior Fellow, Montreal Institute for Genocide and Human Rights Studies

In September 2006, Senator Dallaire was named Senior Fellow of the Montreal Institute for Genocide and Human Rights Studies at Concordia University. In addition to his participation in seminars, lectures and workshops with Concordia students, he will be collaborating on a research initiative that seeks to map the processes by which decisions are made by Western leaders in situations where human rights are being clearly abused. The research project's findings were expected to be announced in June 2007. Get Involved.
